Renal Agenesis treatment and diet
OVERVIEW
Renal Agenesis treatment and diet. Babies missing both kidneys cannot survive without treatment but the only available treatment is experimental. Once diagnosed through prenatal ultrasound, this defect can be addressed in utero with a series of amnioinfusions. Read till the end of this article to know more about Renal Agenesis meaning, its causes, and treatment. And finally, the best diet to manage Renal Agenesis.
Renal Agenesis Meaning: Renal Agenesis treatment and diet
Renal Agenesis treatment and diet. We talk about Renal Agenesis when one or both kidneys completely fail to form. This usually occurs at approximately 4 to 6 weeks into pregnancy and is due to failure in the earliest steps of kidney development.
Years back, many people born with only one kidney (unilateral renal agenesis) lived their lives unaware they did not have two kidneys. Today, prenatal ultrasound makes it much easier to diagnose these conditions and provide better treatment for babies. This also makes treatment much easier and improves outcomes for babies missing both kidneys, which is called bilateral renal agenesis.
Renal agenesis is a rare condition in which babies are missing one or both kidneys at birth. In this disorder, one or both kidneys fail to develop between the fourth and sixth week of gestation. There are two types of renal agenesis:
Bilateral renal agenesis
Also known as Potter syndrome Bilateral renal agenesis, means that both kidneys are missing. This occurs in about one in every 3,000 to 4,500 live births and is more common in boys. When neither kidney develops, it causes a lack of amniotic fluid, which is usually the reason for diagnosis as the low fluid levels are visible during a routine prenatal ultrasound.
Babies with no kidneys are unable to survive without treatment and the available treatments are still experimental. With no kidneys, the baby doesn’t produce urine, leading to low amniotic fluid and incomplete lung development.
In this case, the baby develops only one kidney. Found in roughly one in 1,000 live births (higher in twins), this condition is not fatal and often causes no additional symptoms. When a baby has just one kidney, the organ grows larger to compensate for and perform the functions of both.
Most babies born with one kidney live normal lives, but this condition is associated with abnormal development of the genitals in 12% of males and 40% of females.
While the exact cause is unknown, unilateral renal agenesis is more common with intrauterine growth restriction (poor growth during pregnancy) and in multiples (twins, triplets, etc.). Unilateral renal agenesis is sometimes seen as an association with a two-vessel umbilical cord, rather than the normal three-vessel cord.
The cause of bilateral renal agenesis, the absence of both kidneys, is also unknown. In most cases, there is no family history of the condition, though, in around one-quarter of cases, there is a genetic component.
The risk of a future pregnancy being affected by renal agenesis is approximately 3 to 4%. If the renal agenesis is part of a condition with multiple abnormalities, the chance for it to reoccur in a future pregnancy may be as high as 8%.
Both types of renal agenesis can be identified in sonographic findings. Unilateral renal agenesis is found when the one developed kidney is larger than normal for the gestational age. Hypertension can also develop due to this anomaly, leading to a diagnosis and requiring postnatal follow-up examinations.
Bilateral renal agenesis can be observed through sonographic findings that detail complete or severe depletion of amniotic fluid levels at 14 to 16 weeks. The inability to visualize the fetal bladder after 16 weeks of pregnancy should prompt further investigation for bilateral renal agenesis.
As a parent, receiving the news that your child may be missing both kidneys can be devastating. Even a diagnosis of unilateral renal agenesis can be worrisome, but the Colorado Fetal Care Center is a national leader in diagnosing and treating both types of renal agenesis.
Treatment for renal agenesis depends on the severity and type (unilateral or bilateral). For both types of agenesis, the standard treatment protocol involves monitoring the baby with numerous ultrasounds and planning delivery at the Colorado Fetal Care Center. While C-sections are not usually required to deliver babies with renal agenesis, immediate access to our care team after birth is essential to guarantee the best outcomes.
Babies missing both kidneys cannot survive without treatment but the only available treatment is experimental.
Once diagnosed through prenatal ultrasound, this defect can be addressed in utero with a series of amnioinfusions. This means that physicians inject saline solution into the amniotic sac to help the baby’s lungs develop. Once the lungs start to develop, some stress is taken off the baby’s system and he or she may be able to survive once outside the womb. The first known baby to survive bilateral renal agenesis did so in 2013 as a result of this new treatment. Two years later, she received a kidney transplant.
The Colorado Fetal Care Center offers a special amniopor t fermi procedure to facilitate amnioinfusion and to avoid repeated potentially risky injections. Once the baby is born, he or she will be dependent upon dialysis until a kidney transplant can be attempted, usually at 1 year or older. The ability to offer dialysis after birth depends on the baby’s size, weight, and gestational age.
Most babies who are missing just one kidney have no other symptoms, as that one organ grows large enough to perform the duties of both. However, infants with unilateral renal agenesis can have hypertension (high blood pressure) and may be born prematurely.
What is the prognosis for babies with bilateral renal agenesis?
In 2013, the first known baby to survive bilateral renal agenesis provided hope for all families who face this severe diagnosis. In that case, in utero injections of saline solution restored amniotic fluid and allowed the lungs to develop. Once born, the baby was dependent on dialysis for three years, until her father donated her a kidney.
Those who are suffering from Renal Agenesis function must adhere to a renal or kidney diet to cut down on the amount of waste in their blood. Wastes in the blood come from food and liquids that are consumed. When kidney function is compromised, the kidneys do not filter or remove waste properly. If waste is left in the blood, it can negatively affect a patient’s electrolyte levels. Following a kidney diet may also help promote kidney function and slow the progression of complete kidney failure.
The best renal diet is low in sodium, phosphorous, and protein. A renal diet also emphasizes the importance of consuming high-quality protein and usually limiting fluids. Some patients may also need to limit potassium and calcium. Every person’s body is different, and therefore, each patient must work with a renal dietitian work to come up with a diet that is tailored to the patient’s needs.
We have tried to list beneath Renal Agenesis diet ththat are crucial to monitor to promote a renal diet:
Sodium
What are Sodium and its role in the body?
Sodium is a mineral found in most natural foods. Most people think of salt and sodium as interchangeable. Salt, however, is a compound of sodium and chloride. Foods we eat may contain salt or they may contain sodium in other forms. Processed foods often contain higher levels of sodium due to added salt.
Sodium is one of the body’s three major electrolytes (potassium and chloride are the other two). Electrolytes control the fluids going in and out of the body’s tissues and cells. Sodium contributes to:
Also Regulating nerve function and muscle contraction
Regulating the acid-base balance of blood
Balancing how much fluid the body keeps or eliminates
Why should kidney patients monitor sodium intake?
Too much sodium can be harmful to people with kidney disease because their kidneys cannot adequately eliminate excess sodium and fluid from the body. As sodium and fluid build up in the tissues and bloodstream, they may cause:
Increased thirst
Edema: swelling in the legs, hands, and face
High blood pressure
Heart failure: excess fluid in the bloodstream can overwork your heart, making it enlarged and weak
Shortness of breath: fluid can build up in the lungs, making it difficult to breathe
Choose fresh fruits and vegetables or no-salt-added canned and frozen produce.
Avoid processed foods.
Compare brands and use items that are lowest in sodium.
Use spices that do not list “salt” in their title (choose garlic powder instead of garlic salt.)
Cook at home and do NOT add salt.
Limit total sodium content to 400 mg per meal and 150 mg per snack.

Potassium
What are Potassium and its role in the body?: Renal Agenesis treatment and diet
Potassium is a mineral found in many of the foods we eat and is also found naturally in the body. It plays a role in keeping the heartbeat regular and the muscles working correctly. Potassium is also necessary for maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance in the bloodstream. The kidneys help to keep the right amount of potassium in your body and they expel excess amounts into the urine.
Why should kidney patients monitor their potassium intake?: Renal Agenesis treatment and diet
When the kidneys fail, they can no longer remove excess potassium, so potassium levels build up in the body. High potassium in the blood is called hyperkalemia which can cause:
Muscle weakness
An irregular heartbeat
Slow pulse
Heart attacks
Death
How can patients monitor their potassium intake?: Renal Agenesis treatment and diet
When the kidneys no longer regulate potassium, a patient must monitor the amount of potassium that enters the body.
Tips to help keep the levels of potassium in your blood safe, make sure to:
Talk with a renal dietitian about creating an eating plan.
Limit foods that are high in potassium.
Limit milk and dairy products to 8 oz per day.
Choose fresh fruits and vegetables.
Avoid salt substitutes & seasonings with potassium.
Read labels on packaged foods & avoid potassium chloride.
Phosphorus is a mineral that is critical in bone maintenance and development. Phosphorus also assists in the development of connective tissue and organs and aids in muscle movement. When food containing phosphorus is consumed and digested, the small intestines absorb the phosphorus so that it can be stored in the bones.
Why should kidney patients monitor Phosphorus intake?: Renal Agenesis treatment and diet
Normal working kidneys can remove extra phosphorus in your blood. When kidney function is compromised, the kidneys no longer remove excess phosphorus. High phosphorus levels can pull calcium out of your bones, making them weak. This also leads to dangerous calcium deposits in the blood vessels, lungs, eyes, and heart.
How can patients monitor their Phosphorus intake?: Renal Agenesis treatment and diet
Phosphorus can be found in many foods. Therefore, patients with compromised kidney function should work with a renal dietitian to help manage phosphorus levels.
Tips to help keep phosphorus at safe levels:
Know what foods are lower in phosphorus.
Pay close attention to serving size
Eat smaller portions of foods that are high in protein at meals and for snacks.
Eat fresh fruits and vegetables.
Ask your physician about using phosphate binders at mealtime.
Avoid packaged foods that contain added phosphorus. Look for phosphorus, or words with “PHOS” on ingredient labels.
Keep a food journal

Protein: Renal Agenesis treatment and diet
Protein is not a problem for healthy kidneys. Normally, protein is ingested and waste products are created, which in turn are filtered by the nephrons of the kidney. Then, with the help of additional renal proteins, the waste turns into urine. In contrast, damaged kidneys fail to remove protein waste and it accumulates in the blood.
The proper consumption of protein is tricky for Chronic Kidney Disease patients as the amount differs with each stage of the disease. Protein is essential for tissue maintenance and other bodily roles, so it is important to eat the recommended amount for the specific stage of disease according to your nephrologist or renal dietician.
Fluids: Renal Agenesis treatment and diet
Fluid control is important for patients in the later stages of Chronic Kidney Disease. because normal fluid consumption may cause fluid buildup in the body which could become dangerous. People on dialysis often have decreased urine output, so increased fluid in the body can put unnecessary pressure on the person’s heart and lungs.
A patient’s fluid allowance is calculated on an individual basis, depending on urine output and dialysis settings. It is vital to follow your nephrologist’s/nutritionist’s fluid intake guidelines.
To control fluid intake, patients should:
NDo to drink more than what your doctor orders
Count all foods that will melt at room temperature
Be cognizant of the numbering of fluids used in cooking

Ginkgo Biloba Health Benefits. It is also used by many cancer patients to treat and prevent cancer and reduce chemotherapy-associated toxicity
OVERVIEW
Ginkgo biloba, or maidenhair, is a tree native to China that has been grown for thousands of years for a variety of uses. Because it’s the only surviving member of an ancient order of plants, it’s sometimes referred to as a living fossil. The leaves and seeds are used in traditional medicine to treat respiratory diseases, circulatory disorders, sexual dysfunction, and loss of hearing. Scroll down till the end to know more about Ginkgo Biloba’s health benefits and its side effects.
Ginkgo Biloba also known as Maidenhair tree, Kew tree, bai Guo, or yin xing ye is one of the oldest living tree species, and is cultivated worldwide for its medicinal properties and aesthetic appeal. The leaves and seeds are used in traditional medicine to treat respiratory diseases, circulatory disorders, sexual dysfunction, and loss of hearing. The leaf extract is a popular herbal supplement and is promoted extensively for memory loss. Ginkgo is also used by many cancer patients to treat and prevent cancer and reduce chemotherapy-associated toxicity. Ginkgo supplements are available as tablets, capsules, and liquid extracts. The dried leaves are used for tea.
In vitro studies of ginkgo extracts indicate anti-infective, chemopreventive, anticancer, and cytotoxic effects. Epidemiological data indicate that ginkgo may play a role in reducing the risk of ovarian cancer. However, data from the Gingko Evaluation of Memory (GEM) study, in which cancer risk was the secondary outcome, do not support ginkgo’s effectiveness in reducing cancer risk. Studies in patients with gastric cancer showed a reduction in tumour area following oral supplementation with capsules of ginkgo exocarp polysaccharides. A combination of an injectable form of ginkgo extract and 5-fluorouracil improved the quality of life of patients with advanced colorectal cancer. Further studies are needed to determine the anticancer potential of ginkgo supplements.
Evidence of an anticancer effect for ginkgo is limited.

In one study, individuals with a generalised anxiety disorder who took ginkgo compared to the placebo experienced better anxiety relief.
HELPING REDUCE SYMPTOMS ASSOCIATED WITH PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS
There has also been a lot of research into ginkgo biloba’s ability to help reduce symptoms associated with psychiatric disorders and dementia when used consistently over time. While studies have found that dementia, Alzheimer’s and other similar conditions cannot be completely prevented by taking ginkgo, this herbal ingredient can help to stimulate blood flow to the brain which in turn helps with an individual’s cognitive ability and processing. Small studies have suggested that modest improvements in cognitive function in older adults with mild dementia were exhibited as a result of taking ginkgo biBiloba
It is important to state that results are varied in research on the effects of ginkgo and dementia so it is important to talk to your care team before taking any supplements that you think may have an impact on your health.
IMPROVING BRAIN FUNCTIONS AND MEMORY: Ginkgo Biloba Health Benefits
Several studies have reported that taking ginkgo Biloba supports the brain’s functions helping people with processing skills, memory and alertness. This can happen as a result of increased blood flow to the brain.
Treating Sexual Dysfunction: Ginkgo Biloba Health Benefits
Some sources indicate that ginkgo may treat sexual dysfunction, such as erectile dysfunction or low libido.
Ginkgo hacanmprove blood levels of nitric oxide, which improves circulation via the dilation of blood vessels (7Trusted Source).
As a result, ginkgo may also be useful for treating various symptoms of sexual dysfunction by improving blood flow to those areas of the body.
Some research has investigated using ginkgo to treat sexual dysfunction caused by the use of antidepressant drugs (SSRIs). Results indicated that ginkgo wasn’t any more effective than a placebo in these cases.
Additionally, there may be an interaction between ginkgo and SSRI medications, which could render them less effective.
One study evaluated the use of ginkgo to increase sexual desire and contentment in women who were concurrently undergoing sexual psychotherapy.
The combination of ginkgo and therapy was effective over a longer term compared to a placebo, but supplementing with ginkgo alone was not.
The rationale for using ginkgo to treat sexual dysfunction makes sense, but research does not support it at this time.
VerVain Health Benefits and Sides Effects. Verbenalin in vervain, known for its calming effects, reduces anxiety and depression.
OVERVIEW
Most of the species are native to the Americas and Asia. However, Verbena Officinalis, the common vervain or common verbena, is a type of species native to Europe. Verbena Officinalis is a perennial herb found in open areas, near dwellings, hillsides and roadsides in temperate, subtropical and tropical areas worldwide. Scroll down to know more about verbena’s health benefits and side effects.
All you need to know about Verbena: VerVain Health Benefits and Sides Effects
Vervain (Verbena Officinalis) is a flowering perennial plant, which means it regrows year after year. It has delicate, jagged leaves and tiny, five-petaled blossoms with no scent. It is not the same as lemon verbena, a garden herb used for cooking that also has medicinal properties.
Vervain contains iridoid glycosides, like verbenalinand hastatoside, which protect the plant from infection and are known for sleep promotion. In addition, vervain contains verbascoside, a plant compound high in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It also has flavonoids, plant compounds that reduce inflammation and oxidization and prevent gene mutations.
Verbena other names: VerVain Health Benefits and Sides Effects
Vervain is also called:
American blue verbena
Simpler’s joy
Holy herb
Mosquito plant
Wild hyssop
In traditional Chinese medicine, it is called mǎ biān cǎo.
Dietary supplements are not regulated in the United States, meaning the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not approve them for safety and effectiveness before products are marketed. When possible, choose a supplement that has been tested by a trusted third party, such as USP, ConsumerLabs, or NSF.
However, even if supplements are third-party tested, that doesn’t mean that they are necessarily safe for all people or effective in general. Therefore, it is important to talk to your healthcare provider about any supplements you plan to take and check for any potential interactions with other supplements or medications.

Anxiety and Depression: VerVain Health Benefits and Sides Effects
The verbenalin in vervain, an iridoid glycoside known for its calming effects, has prompted some research on the herb’s potential for reducing anxiety and depression.
A 2016 animal study published in the Frontiers of Pharmacology looked at how vervain impacted several factors, including anxiety.2 Researchers found that mice who received a vervain extract dose of 100 milligrams per kilogram of body weight (mg/kg) had the highest anti-anxiety effect measured by movement through a maze. However, when the dosage was higher—300 mg/kg—the effect was reduced, likely due to sedative effects at a higher dosage.
In addition, a 2020 animal study in Basic and Clinical Neuroscience evaluated the antidepressant effects of vervain.3 Researchers found that rats that received 200 mg/kg vervain extract by oral administration experienced an antidepressant effect, shown by significantly decreased immobility time, increased time spent in light, and the number of entries into central maze squares.
Since researchers conducted these studies on rodents, it is uncertain whether the results would translate similarly to humans. Therefore, more research is needed.
Insomnia: VerVain Health Benefits and Sides Effects
The calming effect of compounds in vervain has similarly prompted research on the plant’s potential in helping those with insomnia.
In the 2016 study referenced above, researchers looked at the sedative properties of vervain.2 When the researchers gave mice a 50–300 mg/kg dose of an extract of vervain, they noticed an increase in sedative effects with increasing dosage. Mice who received vervain had decreased sleep onset and increased sleep duration.
Since researchers conducted this study on mice, it’s unclear whether these benefits would transfer to humans. Therefore, more research is needed.
Again, the sedative nature of vervain’s compounds has prompted research on the herb’s anticonvulsant potential.
In the above-referenced 2016 study, researchers also examined the anticonvulsant activities of vervain in mice.2 Researchers noticed a dose-dependent response in mice who received 100–500 mg/kg of vervain extract. In addition, mice dosed with vervain had delayed onset and decreased duration time of tonic-clonic seizures (a classic seizure with unconsciousness and limb jerking).
As with the other study results, it’s unclear whether the same benefits could be applied to humans. So, more research is needed.
Infections: VerVain Health Benefits and Sides Effects
Treating infectious diseases has become increasingly challenging because of growing antibiotic resistance. Vervain’s antimicrobial properties have prompted research on the herb’s possible role in overcoming these challenges.
In a 2016 study in Cogent Chemistry, researchers examined the antimicrobial potential of vervain. Scientists evaluated different parts of vervain against 24 strains of disease-causing bacteria.4 According to the research:
Extracts derived from the stem of V. Officinalis killed bacteria Staphylococcus aureus andPseudomonas aeruginosa in the test tube more effectively than the antibiotic amoxicillin.
Similarly, the plant’s leaves showed considerable activity against the bacterium Citrobacter freundii.
The root turned out to be highly effective against the bacterium Bacillus subtilis.
This research was conducted in test tubes, so more research is needed to see if the same results would occur in humans.
Colorectal Cancer: VerVain Health Benefits and Sides Effects
Flavonoids, antioxidants found in vervain, reduce oxidization and gene mutations. Therefore, some researchers have looked at the herb’s anticancer potential, specifically in colorectal cancer.
A 2017 laboratory study published in the Tropical Journal of Pharmaceutical Research examined how polysaccharides (a type of long-chain carbohydrate) extracted from vervain affected colorectal cancer cells.5 Researchers found that an extract of V. Officinalis polysaccharides significantly inhibited cell invasion and migration and significantly decreased cell adhesion.
Other
In addition to the potential health benefits listed above, some people use vervain to support:
Headaches
General aches and pain
Digestive dysfunction
Upper respiratory tract symptoms
There is little research available to support these uses.
Your healthcare provider may recommend vervain for stress reduction or sleep. However, consuming a herb like a vervain may have potential side effects. These side effects may be common or severe.
Common Side Effects: VerVain Health Benefits and Sides Effects
The FDA considers vervain « generally recognized as safe » (GRAS) as a food.1 Most people who take it experience few side effects, including:
Indigestion and gas
Contact dermatitis
Localized rash and redness
To limit the likelihood of an allergic reaction, apply a little to the skin before using a vervain tincture and wait an hour to see if a rash develops.
Always speak with a healthcare provider before taking a supplement to ensure that the supplement and dosage are appropriate for your individual needs.
Since the FDA does not regulate herbs, there are no guidelines for the appropriate use of vervain in treating medical conditions. Capsule doses range from 150 milligrams to 1,000 milligrams.
In animal research, the following dosages were used:2
200 mg/kg for depression
100-300 mg/kg for anxiety
50–300 mg/kg for sleep
100–500 mg/kg for seizures
The quality of traditional Chinese herbs and other folk remedies varies. According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, some Chinese herbal products are safe, but others are not.7
For example, some products do not contain the listed ingredients. In addition, some analyses have reported that products were contaminated with things including:7
Undeclared plant or animal materials
Drugs
Pesticides
Heavy metals
Incorrect herbs
Discussing vervain with a healthcare provider can ensure you choose a reputable product and take the correct dose.
How to Store Vervain
Store dried herbs in an airtight container at room temperature and out of sunlight. Discard after one year. Similarly, keep capsules, tinctures, and powders in a cool, dry place and away from direct sunlight. Again, discard after one year or as indicated on the packaging.
People do not usually consume vervain as whole food. Instead, people dry the herb and use it in teas. In addition, it is available in supplement form.
Vervain supplements come in many forms, including:
Capsules
Tinctures
Extracts
Astringents
Teas
Powders
Dried herbs
Since vervain is a herb, it is plant-based. However, you should carefully read the ingredients of any supplements and teas to see if they include other components. If you have allergies, read labels carefully to ensure the product does not contain any known allergens, such as wheat, egg, or milk.
Summary
Vervain is a herb sometimes used medicinally to treat insomnia, anxiety and depression, and infections. Even so, evidence to support the health benefits of vervain is limited and more research is needed to conclude whether it is safe and effective as complementary medicine.
Since it is a herbal supplement, the FDA does not regulate vervain. So, quality and safety vary. Also, remember that vervain is not a replacement for standard medical care. Always discuss any OTC medicine, including herbal supplements, with a healthcare provider.
